Refrigerator Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

Dean Wade

The refrigerator is one of the most relied upon appliances in the kitchen--and even the house! For that reason, many homeowners panic when their fridge ceases to function properly. Fortunately, it isn't as hard as you may imagine to keep your refrigerator in good working order. This article will outline two simple things you can do to prevent more serious problems.

Perform a freezer defrost periodically.

Newer fridges are often equipped with a so-called self-defrost feature. Yet for anyone who doesn't happen to own such an up to the minute appliance, defrosting is something you will have to do on your own periodically. If you don't defrost your freezer, its walls will gradually accumulate a layer of ice. This may not seem like such a terrible thing, until you consider that it will act to drive up the overall energy consumption of your refrigerator in order to prevent that ice from melting.

Here's how you can ensure optimal efficiency and give yourself the maximum amount of space in your freezer. First, transfer the contents to a cooler filled with ice or freezer packs. Now unplug the refrigerator The idea is simply to let all of that ice melt into water. Of course, you also have a fridge full of food that you don't want to spoil, so you'll probably want to help the process of melting along as best you can. There are several ways of accomplishing this:

  • melting the ice with a hairdryer
  • placing a fan in a position to help increase air circulation into the freezer
  • put bowls of hot water in the freezer
  • wiping down the icy walls with a cloth steeped in boiling water

Be aware that this process will result in a good deal of water from the melting ice. Your freezer should be equipped with a  special drainage hole, which will route such water to a hose that comes out the bottom of your fridge. Simply be sure that this hose is directed into a large enough bowl, otherwise you may find a minor flood on your hands.

Keep a fresh water filter installed.

This is an important tip for anyone whose refrigerator is equipped with a built-in water (and ice) dispenser. Such dispensers are only capable of providing clean healthy water if they are equipped with a fresh filter. The older a filter gets, the more it will affect the taste and appearance of your water. To enjoy the highest quality water, be sure to swap out a new filter at least once every six months.
