Servicing Your Dishwasher: What You Should Know

Dean Wade

Your dishwasher does a lot of work. It does the hard work of washing all of your dishes for you, so you don't have to. Consider how many dirty dishes you have in a day, and then add up over time the number of dishes you don't have to wash by hand. It's more than likely a lot, which can be a time saver and will save you from all of those times you would have gotten dishpan hands. If your dishwasher has stopped working, there are things you may be able to do to get it working again. Read on for tips to service your dishwasher.

Clean The Filter

Pull out the bottom rack from the dishwasher, then remove the sprayer arms at the base of the dishwasher. Once removed, you can have access to the filter at the base. This filter can accumulate with debris over time and clog the filter. You may be able to clean out the filter, or you may have to remove the filter altogether. Removing the filter is the best option you should choose in order to clean it properly and to clean beneath it. Remove the filter and soak it in a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Clean inside the filter and around the drain. If needed, pour vinegar and baking soda into the drain as well. Once the filter is clean, you can replace it and the sprayer arms as well.

Clean The Sprayer Arms

With the sprayer arms removed from the dishwasher, use a toothpick to pick out the debris inside the waterspouts. This can accumulate with calcium buildup or other debris. If needed, you should soak the sprayer arms in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Once the calcium is softened, you can pick out the calcium much easier.

Clean The Interior Of The Dishwasher

With the dishwasher empty, you should place a glass filled with white vinegar in it. Place the glass inside the top rack and then turn on the dishwasher to a normal setting. Run the dishwasher through a cycle, then open the dishwasher when finished. Wipe down the interior of the dishwasher to remove any hard water using vinegar and baking soda. Wipe down the inside of the dish detergent bin(s).

A dishwasher is a major appliance that does a lot of the hard work for you, so you don't have to. If your dishwasher is not running properly, you should hire a professional appliance service company to service your dishwasher for you.
